St Patrick's Chapel, Dilworth Senior School

Designed as a contemporary place of worship and gathering, the new St Patrick's Chapel at Dilworth Senior School provides a landmark spiritual and community space that honours the school's Anglican heritage while embracing modern architectural design. The Building Agency supplied Innowood American Oak for the walls and ceilings, creating a warm, natural interior that enhances both the architectural vision and the acoustic performance of the chapel.

The Challenge:
The new chapel was designed to accommodate up to 775 students, staff, and whānau, replacing the existing 425-seat chapel while creating a space that inspires reflection, connection, and community. The interior material palette needed to evoke warmth and permanence, complement the dramatic folded ceiling design, and contribute to the carefully engineered acoustic environment capable of supporting worship services, musical performances, and community events.

The Solution:
Innowood American Oak was selected throughout the wall and ceiling linings to deliver the natural beauty of timber with the consistency, durability, and low-maintenance performance of an advanced architectural lining system. The warm timber finish accentuates the soaring folded ceilings, drawing the eye toward the sanctuary while creating a welcoming and contemplative atmosphere.

Beyond its visual impact, the timber lining plays an important role in the chapel's acoustic design, helping create an environment suited to both spoken word and musical performance.
